Probably not a very interesting subject for a War Story Discussion, however generators played an extremely useful role in our combat lives ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Generators ran all the equipment in the Tactical Operations Center (TOC), gave us power for the night outdoor movie projector, lighting and power in our hooches, kept the company drinks refrigerator cool and best of all kept our fans going in the hot dreary weather. Most of our generators were not organic to the unit but scrounged, purchased or stolen. What would we have done without them?
Those pilots who were stuck as Motor Pool Officer (Additional Duty) also inherited the unit generators. If they were lucky they had a great Motor Pool NCO who ran things including the guys who kept the vehicles and generators going so that they could go fly.
See Gene Tuckers Generator Story.
Jerry Brownfield mentions running the Generators for the HHT TOC.
Bruce Powell talks about working on the Generators when he was Motor Pool Officer.
Tom Fleming pays tribute to the men who kept the Generators running.
In the InfoSheet/Obit for CW2 Chuck Weseman Charlie Rice talks about him as being nicknamed "Pole Cat" because of his keeping the Generators running and climbing the power poles to the hootches to fix the wiring.
There is a photo somewhere of Chuck, in the company area with his climbing gear on, up a powerline pole fixing the wiring. If you find it please get it to me powellcentaur@gmail.com
Brian "Stretch" Harrison mentions setting up a Generator for their Fire Direction Center at Long Binh.
