Those Two Crazy Bastards Up Front

Mike Vaughn

.....................................................................................................................................................................................
Not a true story, just a piece of fiction. However, this is my salute to Those Two Crazy Bastard Up Front.

BastardsUpFrontAfter over fifty years of gathering my thoughts on the job as a Crew Chief and Door Gunner on a UH-1 Lift helicopter during the Vietnam War I’ve concluded Those Two Crazy Bastards Up Front were…Crazy.
I remember times when our crew would be flying along, minding our own business, on some ash and trash mission. Suddenly, there’s a call for a Dust-off from a Hot LZ.

Do we continue to fly along on our relatively safe ash and trash mission? NO! Those Two Crazy Bastards Up Front have volunteered our crew for the Dust-off mission.

Or our crew may be having some down time due to weather conditions. Unexpectedly, you’re ordered to head to your helicopter and start the burn to make them turn. What the Hell? Oh, those Two Crazy Bastards Up Front have volunteered our crew for a LRRP extraction.

You know as I think about it, it was ALWAYS those Two Crazy Bastards Up Front that put our crew in those situations. It must be something about riding up front.

Those Two Crazy Bastards would take our crew into situations where our helicopter would get shot full of holes. Oh no problem, I’ll patch all them holes while you Two Crazy Bastards get your beauty rest.

Although our helicopter crew built a reputation on, we’ll come and get you, or die trying. I suppose that wouldn’t be possible, without those Two Crazy Bastards Up Front. Mike
