Info Sheet/Obituary - MAJ George N. Stenehjem
Died 24 September 2024
George Stenehjem came to D Troop as an infusion (brought in from a different unit) at the sixth month of his Vietnam tour. He was one of six officers who were infused at the same time (All Majors). He served as the Heavy Scout Section Leader for a while then moved to Troop Executive Officer, and then in March 1967 to Troop Commander, replacing Gene Prosser. In April 1967 Col Web, the Squadron Commander, DEROSed. Col Shea, from MACV was the designated replacement for Commander of the 3/4 Cav. However, he was delayed by MACV for several months because of an important study he was deeply involved in. MAJ Stenehjem was the senior officer in the Squadron and claimed the Acting Squadron Commander position with the concurrence of the Commanding General of the 25th Infantry Division. The length of time it took for MACV to release LTC Shea was extended and MAJ Stenehjem was able to serve long enough for an efficient report as Squadron Commander. info provided by Tom Fleming
