In a note their good friends Linda and Larry Richardson, Willi's wife sent more details of what happened to him:

3/14/2013 - …With a very sad heart I am writing to let you know that Willi passed away on Monday. He was diagnosed with Brain cancer in December and had brain surgery on new years eve. He did pretty good after surgery, even though they could only get about 60% of his tumor.

Unfortunately he had a stroke 10 days later caused from the surgery and that left him with no right sided movement or no speech. He chose to do radiation, chemo, physical/occupational/speech therapy because he was a fighter and loved his life…he really wanted to Iive and I know he did it for me. It was just so hard for him. He always said to me "if a dog can't be a dog, a dog shouldn't be alive". I understand that now.

He did not want a funeral but he said he would let me do a burial at the DFW Veteran's Cemetery. On April 26 we will do that and on the 27 we are going to have a party at our house to celebrate his life (that is what he wanted). ……

I will never forget the wonderful time we had at the reunion with you two and he was really looking forward to the next one.

Love you Linda
