Robert Henry Maxey was born December 24, 1928 in Davao, Philippine Islands. Died November 19, 2017 in Eugene, Oregon. The son of Milburn A. Maxey of Todd Co, Kentucky and Julia Pamatlaun of Surigao, P.I. The family owned hemp plantations and a cattle ranch, but all was lost when the Japanese invaded in WW II.
Robert and his brothers joined the resistance forces and fought throughout the war, being taken prisoner at one time but escaping doing a typhoon. After the war he returned to school, joined the Merchant Marine and then enlisted in the U.S. Army.
He went on to fight in the Korean War; where he was captured by the Chinese and served eight months in a prisoner of war camp.
He served for three tours in Vietnam. When he served as 1st Sergeant of A Troop, 1st Squadron, 3d ACR he was
known as the Cav’s most decorated trooper. At that time he had earned 52 medals and decorations. The highest being 2 Distinguished Service Crosses.
Throughout his long and illustrious career he was loved by family, friends, and especially those with whom he served. After his retirement he truly enjoyed attending military reunions and keeping in touch with “His Men”.
He is survived by three daughters: Angela Percival (Kurt) of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Teresa Shane of Omaha, Nebraska and Julia Maxey of Odenton, Maryland. Four sons; Thomas Maxey (Sheryl) of Salina, Kansas. Patrick Maxey of Salina. Kevin Maxey (Laura) of Mariposa, Calif. and Robard Maxey of Veneta, Oregon. His daughter-in-law, Tara Maxey of Salina and his loving wife, Ardean of Veneta, Oregon.
Anyone fortunate enough to have known this man realized that he was truly an extraordinary individual. Full of joy, laughter, and a great love of life. He loved music, dancing, good food, good conversation and always had a twinkle in his eye for a pretty lady. He however, himself, was the embodiment of what he knew to be the greatest of compliments. He was a good soldier. We will miss him terribly.
