Obituary

Alvin Earl Maynard Sr. 1940 ~ 2009
SEASIDE, CA- Alvin Earl Maynard Sr. a.k.a. "Big Al" or "Road Dog" was born to Wilfred Byron Maynard and Doris Fobbs in Panama on March 20, 1940. At the tender age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He went on to proudly serve his country as a Medical Specialist, Administrative Specialist and later in his military career, a Drill Sergeant. During his 20 years of service he received honors such as: National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal 5th Award, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea and Vietnam), Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device, Combat Medical Badge and a Bronze Star Medal during his duty in Vietnam from March 13, 1972-February 15, 1973. Before his honorable discharge from Fort Ord, CA in 1978, he was a drug counselor on the base. His wisdom and humanitarian nature helped change the lives of many lost souls. As a retired E-7, he went on to lay down a foundation for his legacy.

Alvin was an avid golfer, fisherman and community member. He was proud to say that he was the only male "room mother" from 1985-1994 at Junipero Serra School in Carmel, CA. He donated countless hours to field trips, fundraisers, sporting events, chaperoning and cooking all for the benefit of his children and others. Alvin had an extreme passion for the culinary arts and became a master in the trade.

He was preceded in death by his little brother, Wesley Maynard and his maternal and paternal grandparents. With heavy hearts he leaves behind his most precious possessions, his 93-year-old father; 92-year- old mother; sisters: Janice, Judy, Sharon and Denise, brother: Rolando; daughters: Vanessa, Dauphine, MoRaya and Xzondria; and his sons, Alvin Jr. and Danny. His legacy also includes six grandchildren, one great grandchild, cousins, nieces, nephews and a wealth of longtime, loving friends and adopted family.

On Saturday, November 14, 2009 a Memorial Service was held at the Fort Ord Chapel on General Jim Moore Blvd. Bldg., 4280; per the deceased's request all active military personnel should be uniformed. A reception followed at the V.F.W. in Seaside, CA.

Donations may be made to the Maynard Family Trust Fund. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your support!

Hugh M. Stovall: Doc Maynard was the ONLY medic on Tan My.  He even beat ME there.

July 7, 1972? That day I recall WELL. Doc, a few other guys and I were on our way to the PX on DaNang AFB, and about; more or less, 150-175 or so meters from the pizza shack but damn near a couple of admin or quarters barracks, WHAM. A rocket hit. Doc took a shitload of the concussion, and thank God no fragments, and blew his butt a good 10-meters or so backwards on a leg that wasn't 100% to begin with. The blast didn't make it any better.
