Mr. Jerry Don Matthews, 57, of South Pittsburg, Tn., died on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at his home.
The son of the late Joseph Walter and Kathleen Elizabeth King Matthews, he was of the Baptist faith and was a devoted husband and father. He loved fishing with his son, Keith.
A U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam, he was crew chief and door gunner on a helicopter with D Troop, 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry, hunter killer team. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans, having been disabled while serving his country in Vietnam. He was decorated with 34 medals, including two Purple Hearts, medals for valor, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was one of the most highly decorated veterans in the State of Tennessee.
He is survived by his wife, Janet R. Matthews; son, Keith Matthews, both of South Pittsburg; brothers and sisters, Wanda Braden, Kenneth Matthews, Nita Cash and Valerie Lancaster, all of Jasper; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home on Wednesday, at 1 p.m. CST with Reverend Roger Webb and Reverend Doug Janeway officiating. Interment will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be provided by Chapter 203 of the Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. CST at Rogers Funeral Home in Jasper.
