John Edward Hurley, Jr., 70, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016 in Marshall. John was born April 25, 1946 in Ft. Sam Houston, Texas to John Edward Hurley, Sr. and Peggy Poole. He graduated from Corpus Christi Carroll High School and received his Bachelor Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.

He served his country honorably in the US Army receiving a Vietnam Service Medal, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross Award. He was also a member of the Commemorative Air Force.

John cared deeply for his community and was greatly involved in many organizations, including Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Marshall Metro Rotary (Past President) and First United Methodist Church. Brother John Hurley was an Endowed Member and Past Master of Marshall Lodge No. 22 A.F. & A.M., received the prestigious Golden Trowel Award in 1999, and was presented with the 25 year Lodge Service Award in 2014. He was a member of the York Rite bodies of Masonry in Marshall, Longview, and Carthage and was a Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal & Select Masters of Texas. He also served as Past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

John was active as a Shriner, serving as President of the Harrison County Shrine Association. He was a long-time member of the Sharon Shrine Pistol Team and loved to help children by volunteering his time to the Shriner’s International Pancake Day and “Paper Day.” He was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason. John’s devotion to helping others will never be forgotten.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward Hurley, Sr. and Peggy Poole, and stepmother, Margaret Montgomery Hurley. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Fran Hurley; daughters, Secili DeStefano (Darren) and Holly Feather (John); grandchildren, Kyra and Cole DeStefano and Lily Feather; sister, Linda Quintanilla; sisters-in-law, Geraldine Mauthe and Betty Smith-Henigsmith (Kenny); nieces and nephews, Martheil Clanton (John), Jamie Baker (John), Robby Richey (Ashley), Katie Terhune (Miles), Hali Oney (Kenny); great-nieces and nephews, Jonathan Clanton, Ella Clanton, Christian Clanton, Ethan Hunley, Alex Baker, Sean Baker, Bryson Richey, Cutter Richey, Nash Richey and Hayden Oney.
