Info Sheet - CPT Joseph V. "Joe" Johnson
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
We hope that Joe will provide us with some comments about himself and his Centaur tour.
Doug Olsen: I remember CPT Johnson as a Hvy Wpn section leader. I believe he followed CPT Wilde. He came into the section as a Captain, never knew him as a 1st Lt. He was a good leader and pilot, explained things and why. I don't have too many memories of flying with him, but I did.
A story about his leadership style; on a hootch inspection, he noticed that I had elevated my bunk and told me to lower it. (I had done that so that it was lined up with my box fan.) Then he asked me if I wanted to know why. He explained that with it elevated I was above the level of the hootch's sand bags. I hadn't thought of that! Therefore, I did not resent complying with his order. He was a good man! I don't have any pictures of him.
Tom Fleming: Joe was an infusion from 117th Avn who arrived in the summer of 1967. He out ranked Charlie Johnson and took over the Heavy Weapons Section. Tom Fleming
Charlie Johnson: I believe he was scheduled to go to Germany where he was to assume command of an Air Cavalry Troop. I succeeded him as Aero Weapons Section Commander when he left the Troop sometime during the fall of 1967
