Major (Ret) John R. Moore graduated from Meadowdale High School, Dayton OH in 1964. He graduated from Northwestern State University of Louisiana on the U.S. Army's Bootstrap Program & has a Master's Degree from the University of Arizona. He is the Adjutant for the Fort Lowell Chapter 442 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) and is also the National Aide-de-Camp for the National Commander of the MOPH for Region VI, Arizona. John is co-author of the book "When the Nation Called a Third Time - Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Knox, Kentucky: The Vietnam Era."
John began his military career when he was drafted in September 1966. He took basic training at Ft. Knox, KY. Prior to advanced individual training (AIT) he attended the 1st Army NCO Academy's Leadership Preparation Course. John was trained as a tank crewman in Armor AIT. After AIT he drove tanks in the 1st Training Brigade of the Armor Training Center while awaiting an Officer Candidate School (OCS) class date. John began armor OCS in March 1967 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant of armor on 31 Aug 1967. John's subsequent assignments after commissioning include Training Officer, 2nd Bn, 2nd BCT Bde, USATC, Ft. Bliss, TX; Jungle Warfare School, Ft. Sherman, Canal Zone; plt ldr & XO A Troop 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry, 25th Infantry Division, Vietnam; Instructor Cavalry Branch, Command & Staff Department, US Army Armor School; Armor Officer Advance Course, US Army Armor School, Ft. Knox, KY; Cdr B Co, 4th Bn 3rd Tng Bde, & Bn XO 2nd Bn 3rd Tng Bde, USATC, Ft. Polk, LA; Cdr HHT 4th Squadron 12th Cavalry, & Plans Officer G-3 5th Inf Div, Ft. Polk, LA; Advisor 8th Bn 40th Armor 6th Army (Tucson, AZ); Bn XO 1st Bn 73rd Armor (OPFOR) National Training Center; Liaison Officer for Commanding General National Training Center; Staff Officer 177th Armored Bde (Provisional) National Training Center.
Decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star V w/3 OLC, Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart w/2 OLC, Army Commendation Medal V w/2 OLC, Army Achievement Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon w/Device(1960), Presidential Unit Citation, Valorous Unit Citation, RVN Cross of Gallantry w/Palm & RVN Civic Action Honor Medal.
After retirement from the Army John taught 6th grade for 20 years at DeGrazia Elementary School in the Marana School District in Tucson. John is the webmaster for a number of veterans organizations: the 3/4 Cavalry Association website, the A Troop 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry website, the Fort Lowell Chapter 442 of the Military Order of Purple Heart website, and the Armor OCS at Fort Knox website. In addition he maintains the memorial pages on over 100 of the 3/4 Cavalry's Fallen on the Army Together We Served website.
John has been married to his wife Becky for 48 years and they have two daughters, Sarah and Laura. John & Becky have 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.
