For gallantry in action: Specialist Five Walt distinguished himself by heroic actions on 25 April 1969, while serving as an observer with D Troop, 3D Squadron, 4th Cavalry in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a visual reconnaissance mission, Specialist Walt’s light observation helicopter engaged several enemy bunkers and fighting positions with hand grenades. Soon after, the helicopter burst into flames forcing the pilot to land in the dense undergrowth. As the aircraft landed, it was completely engulfed in flames. After he had jumped from the blazing helicopter, Specialist Walt realized that the pilot was still inside the burning wreckage. Ignoring the flames, Specialist Walt braved the intense heat as he pulled his injured comrade from the ship. As he carried the wounded pilot from the danger area, the grenades inside the aircraft were set off by the ever spreading flames. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Walt laid on top of the pilot, shielding him from the lethal shrapnel. His valorous actions were responsible for saving a man’s life. Specialist Walt’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Authority: By direction of the President under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 9 July 1918, AR 672-5-1, and USARV Reg 672-1.
