Myron E. ”Mike” Squires was reared in a Coast Guard family. He graduated from high school in Saint Petersburg, Florida, the home port of an ocean-going US Coast Guard Buoy Tender that was skip- pered by his father.
He is a graduate of the class of 1956 of The University of Florida at Gainesville.
Mike entered active duty directly from ROTC, attending Infantry Officers Basic and Airborne Jump School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He received his aviator wings with the ORWAC “Red Hats” in 1957 at Fort Wolters, Texas.
Before he returned to Vietnam, he ended up back in Mineral Wells commanding the “Red Hats” of the 1st Warrant Officer Candidate Company.
His troop duty as Headquarters Company Commander of the 73rd Infantry Brigade at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, was curtailed for duty in Vietnam.
He was assigned to D troop (Air), 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment of the 25th Infantry Division at Cu Chi, RVN, in March of 1966.
A majority of this tour was as slick lead, Centaur 30, for the Aero Rifle Platoon and LRRP unit.
He served a second RVN tour during 1968-69 commanding the Aviation Detachment of the 21st Signal Group, First Signal Brigade at Nha Trang.
He retired on July 31, 1976, as a Lieutenant Colonel and dedicated a second career to as the Clinic Administrator for The Family Medical Group of Cleveland, Ohio.
Mike and his wife, Dale, are blessed with a blended family of five children, ten grandchildren and a great grandchild. The entire clan celebrated Mike’s 80th birthday on Sept 6, 2013, near their home at Grand Canoe in the mountains of Georgia.
