Randy was the LOH Scout Crew Chief flying with CW2 Edward Lewis "Louie" Mortimer on 5 July 1971 when they were shot down by heavy enemy fire. Louie killed. Randy had a broken back yet tried to save Louie.
Randy was awarded the Silver Star for his actions that day.
