COL Hugh "Sandy" McLeod (US Army Ret)
After Vietnam, Hugh “Sandy” McLeod remained on active duty, but reverted back to his basic branch, Ordnance Corps. He served for 25 years retiring in 1994 at the rank of Colonel. His bio follows.
Sandy McLeod hails from Rutland, VT. He was commissioned as an Ordnance Corps officer by the University of Vermont Army Reserve Officers Training Corps program upon graduation in 1968. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Vermont, Burlington, VT and a Master of Science Degree in Logistics Management from the Air Force Institute of Technology, Dayton, OH. He is a graduate of the US Army Rotary Wing Aviator School, the US Air Force Air Command and Staff College, the US Army War College, and the Program Management Course, Department of Defense Systems Management College.
Sandy served on active duty for over twenty-five years. His numerous military assignments included helicopter pilot with D Troop, 3/4 Cavalry, 25th Infantry Division, Republic of Vietnam; Commander, C Company, 701st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, Ft Riley, KS; Operations Officer, Maintenance Division, Berlin Brigade, US Army, Berlin; Commander, 85th Maintenance Battalion, 3rd Corps Support Command, V Corps, US Army Europe; Director of Maintenance, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, US Army Europe; Director, Weapons Systems Management Directorate and Project Manager, Heavy Tactical Vehicles, US Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command, Warren, MI. He retired from active duty in 1994.
Sandy’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Air Medal (with 28 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Aviator Badge, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
Sandy is currently a strategic business development consultant in the defense industry specializing in military ground systems markets. Prior to becoming a consultant in 2006 COL McLeod held senior management positions with DRS Technologies and MTC Corporation in Michigan.
Sandy is a past president 2nd Region, Association of the United States Army and the Arsenal of Democracy Chapter. He also served as State President for Michigan.
Sandy is married to the former Diane Heliste of Detroit, MI. They have four children, eleven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. They make their winter home in Shelby Township, Macomb County, MI. They enjoy summers with their family and friends in the Bay View community in Petoskey, MI on Lake Michigan.
