Johnny: I enlisted in 1967 did the usual training, went Airborne, then to the 1/17 CAV with the 82nd Airborne. Went to "D" troop 3/4 CAV on 2/69 then to "A" troop on 8/69 then home on 4/70. Big bummer when I got home I wasn't old enough to buy beer and the way people treated me wasn't very good either.

While I was with "D" troop I did a few things, primary was in a bunker maintaining communications with the choppers in the air. Also I drove a water tanker and acted as a observer / door gunner on LOH's and Slicks which ended up getting me a air medal & commendation medal. These weren't given to me till I got to "A" troop and I picked up the BSM with "A" troop. I was a SP-4 with "D" and went to Buck Sargent with "A". Some of the things I did I wasn't supposed or authorized to do but at 20 I didn't know better so I did them anyway.
