Walter L. Buford, born and raised in Charlotte, NC, graduated from West Charlotte Sr. High and joined the US Army in 1966, serving in Vietnam. Returning home, he worked for Duke Power Electric Co. as a draftsman and then ventured into his own construction business until he retired.
As a retired person, residing in Jonesborough, TN, with his wife Yvonne, he has been active as a volunteer in Hunger First, Good Samaritan, Interfaith Hospitality Network and the Melting Pot, feeding the hungry. When the Katrina hurricane struck, he came out of retirement, picked up his tools and joined others in Louisiana, helping to bring a semblance of order to the vast devastation of the times. During all of this, he made time to complete his college education, with an AA from Northeast State College, May 2009.
He served as Superintendent of Sunday School five years at Thankful Baptist Church and is currently Assistant Superintendent of same. He is also the facilitator for the Thankful Baptist Church Men’s Bible Study Group and a member of the Men’s Choir.
