Leonard A. "Lenny" Bowen, a retired Philadelphia police officer, died May 4 1997. He was 49 and lived in Mount Airy.

Bowen served in the Philadelphia Police Department for 24 years before retiring in 1993. His last assignment was with the 5th district, headquartered at Ridge Avenue and Cinnaminson Street.

"He was just a very caring person who loved people." said Vivian Whitmore, a sister.

Bowen was a graduate of Edison High School and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War in which he won the Bronze Star.

He had a love for boating.

He was a member of Jones Memorial Baptist Church, Lodge 5 of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Col. Charles A. Young VFW Post 682.

Survivors include a son, Leonard Eldridge Bowen; a stepson, AO2 Bertram Dunlop, USN; a brother, Eldridge Wl Bowen; three other sisters, Doris Davis, Helen Holt and Saundra Natson, and one grandchild.

Services were held 13 May 1997 at Jones Memorial Baptist Church, 20th and Dauphin streets, where friends called two hours earlier. Burial was at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Woolston Road and Wadsworth Avenue.
