My class was 69-29 in Ft Walters, TX and I was selected to go to Hunter Stewart, GA. My advanced flight school graduating class (22 Sep 69) was not sent directly to Vietnam. I received an assignment to Ft Bragg and 17th Cavalry D Troop. Spent six months there before reporting to RVN 31 March 1970.
Flew by USAF C-121 into Cu Chi a few days later and got my flight gear and weapons. As a FNG the first thing was an orientation flight in left seat of LOH OH-6. LOH pilot really wanted something to talk about so we hovered over many a dead VC bloating in the sun. We flew circular route from Cu Chi to the Cambodian boarder, up the Parrot’s Beak, Straight Edge Woods, to Tay Ninh. Down to Dau Tieng, Boi Loi Woods, Hobo Woods, view of the Iron Triangle a look at the MSR Rt. 1 and back into the Corral. The stink of the bodies and the left and right banking in the LOH was bad but I kept my Cookies.
Assigned as CP in the Slick Platoon until first week in July. The Gun Platoon Leader Marvin Runyan talked the old man into sending to Vung Tau for Cobra Transition. God I loved being a killer. The 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry went back to Hawaii and I was assigned to Troop F, 4th Cav, 2nd Brigade, 25 Inf Div until I received a Direct Commission from CW2 to 2LT in Camp Frenzill Jones, VN on 3 Apr 71 and flew home on the April 5th.
I had many assignments until my separation in July 1986. Went into the Reserves from 86 until activated for the First Gulf War in Nov. 1990. Was allowed to stay until retirement in Feb 1993. Worked as an Army Civilian in Germany until Dec 97, went stateside and was hired by Boeing in Philadelphia Nov 98. Retired from Boeing in 2013 went back as contractor until 2014. Now I just sit around drinking mint juleps telling lies as war stories to the dog and chipmunks.
Been married three times. First bride from Dallas, TX married in Savannah GA. In the chapel. Married second wife in Belton TX and separated in 1991. Met my third wife in 1999 and married in 2013 after my second wife finally gave me divorce. I will die with my third wife Judith Lee Bacon.
