Vol 5 - No 2 - June 15, 1970

A 25th Infantry Division soldier who distinguished himself by exposing himself to enemy fire without regard to his own safety in order to rout the enemy has been added to the Tropic Lightning Combat Honor Roll.

Sergeant Fred B. Stuckey of Longview, Tex., earned the award while serving as a scout observer for an element of Company F (Rangers), 75th Infantry, on April 2, 1970.

The Ranger Team was on a reconnaissance mission when it came under intense enemy fire. Stuckey was in the front of the formation and with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself several times to enemy fire as he positioned himself to return effective fire on the hostile force.

Fred Stuckey: "I got a Silver Star from 2 April 70 . That's the Renegade Woods contact where Jim Tonelli flew in to extract us .....and Richard Adams dismounted the bird with his M60 to cover me and Phillip Norton dragging Don Tinney to the bird . I ride out standing on the skid.

Phillip John Norton: When I tell our story, I also say that Tinney and I would not have made it out alive without Fred's help and Richard's covering fire into the jungle behind us after he dismounted and moved to the right side so he wouldn't hit us. I bet he took out a few more of the enemy. Centaur and Rangers were a deadly force working together.
