There are Vietnamese Red Ant stories all over the web; however it turns out that their real name is not Red Ants but "Weaver Ants". This name comes from their unique nest building behaviour where workers construct nests by weaving together leaves using larval silk.
When they bite, they slice into your skin with their mandible, then spray acid into the wound, adding insult to injury. Many of our Cavalry troopers encountered them clustered in Rubber Trees.
