When 1SG Johnny Martin was killed, MSG William M. McConnell became the First Sergeant of F Troop. He had been in that position only days, when on a mission where he was coordinating a Search and Rescue Mission, he was seriously wounded.

Obituary:
First Sergeant William "Bill" McConnell USA (Ret) of Ozark, died at his home Thursday morning, Jan. 3, 2008, following a brief illness. He was 77.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home with a U.S. Army Chaplain officiating. Burial followed with full military honors in Woodlawn Memory Gardens under the direction of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home. Visitation was held Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, from 6-8 p.m. at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home
Mr. McConnell was born on Sept. 15, 1930, in Anniston, the son of the late Arthur and Melissa McConnell.
Mr. McConnell served in the United States Army from Aug. 12, 1948, to July 31, 1973. He served his country during the Korean War and three tours in Vietnam, retiring in 1973 as a First Sergeant.
Mr. McConnell previously served as member of the Ozark Police Department and later retired from Civil Service.
He is survived by his wife, Mary McConnell; son, MSGT W. Stewart McConnell, and daughter-in-law, Lisa McConnell; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Bruce Sammula, Stephen and Angel McConnell, Margrette McConnell, Ashley and Tyler Wright, Brian Fuller and Caleb Whiteside; great-grandchildren, Dacoda McConnell, Klarissa Sammula and Trenton Wright.
